Drawing, painting and sculpturing together. Organisation of an exhibition.

“Since many migrants have been involved in traumatic experiences in their home country, this is a good technique to process these feelings.”

Description of the activity

In the artistic activities, they work with drawing, painting and sculpture in various materials. In the studio, we also work with exhibition productions from idea to finished exhibition. We have a collaboration with the Adult education where we arrange exhibitions at the libraries in Kronoberg county. This includes everything from the exhibition layout and marketing to the finished product. The activity has 5 people as a maximum number. This for the teacher to be able to advise the participants when painting. The technique is to paint with acrylic painting this technique is easy to perform for the acrylic paint dries quickly and it is possible to paint over if they want to change. This activity works well to practice outdoors in the garden and the light has a great impact when painting.

The leader of the activity is one of the teachers who has an artistic background. The teacher must be able to motivate people to present themselves in their painting. The teacher shows and helps the participants discussing together the different techniques, that are done in Swedish to teach the language.

Steps for the implementation of the activity

When this activity starts with the groups, they are divided into groups of 5 people in each group. They sit together and go through the material. They look at books about painting and they discuss different painting techniques and read about different famous painters. The books are in Swedish and this becomes a learning tool for the migrants.

Participants in this activity are usually beginners and they receive instruction from the teacher who gives them the first basics.

Every year in April, when there are various events with art exhibitions in southern Sweden. The studio also has an exhibition for the works of its participants. They create an exhibition in the studio, where all works of art can be seen. . They have an opening of an exhibition which the public can visit and buy the artworks. This means that others see and leave opinions and have often had a positive impact on the participants. They feel strengthened and they get better self-confidence.
